| St. Robert to Chamber: Aquatic Center groundbreaking Monday afternoon, Outdoor Show held this Saturday |

SAINT ROBERT, Mo. (March 10, 2010) — The million-dollar aquatic facility planned for St. Robert won’t open until sometime next year, but at Wednesday’s noon meeting of the Waynesville-St. Robert Chamber of Commerce, City Administrator Alan Clark announced that the groundbreaking will be 3 p.m. Monday in the city park near the St. Robert Community Center.
“This is finally the day we’ve been waiting on,” Clark said. “You’ll hear a lot about that… everybody is welcome to come and join the festivities.”
The groundbreaking will feature comments by Mayor George Sanders, who has been seriously ill in recent weeks, but been able to spend somewhat more time at city hall.
“He showed up at work on Tuesday, unbeknownst to me, kind of came in behind me and scared me half to death,” Clark said. “He spent the whole day there on Tuesday but hasn’t been back since; I think he kind of overdid it a little bit.”
St. Robert will also be sponsoring an outdoor sports show this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the St. Robert Community Center.
“We’ve got 31 displayers, so basically we’re full to the gills,” Clark said. “All of our local dealerships will be there, Skyline Honda, a lot of our local resort owners and float trip operators plus businesses up at the Lake (of the Ozarks) and points beyond as far as Sullivan.”
The show is free not only to the public but also to the exhibitors, though concessions will be operated by the Marine Corps League.
“It’s just something we want to do to get the community out and try to get that spring fever off our back and get outside and start being in the outdoors,” Clark said.
In other business:
• St. Robert police now have a new police dog, a black Labrador Retriever named “Gus” who isn’t trained to be aggressive and is gentle enough that he can be taken into schools.
“This dog is great with the kids and he has a very keen sense of smell,” Clark said. “You’ll probably see him out and about with the new handler.”
• Clark said progress continues to be made on a pedestrian overpass for Interstate 44 intended to prevent serious injuries or deaths by people running across freeway-speed traffic to reach Wal-Mart and other businesses on St. Robert Boulevard. A property agreement has been finalized, Clark said, and plans call for the engineering work to begin late this year or early next year. |
