ST. ROBERT, Mo. (March 11, 2009) — Police Chief Curtis Curenton and Traffic Sgt. Butch Hohman announced Tuesday that their officers will conduct a sobriety checkpoint within the city limits of St. Robert during the month of March, during which officers will crack down on intoxicated and impaired drivers.

“It’s never worth the risk to drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Drivers could lose their license, pay large fines or worst of all cause a tragic loss of life,” Hohman said.

According to police, out of the nationwide average of 50,000 people who die each year from traffic accidents, 30,000 were involved in either alcohol-related or drunk driving accidents. In Missouri during 2007, 243 people were killed in more than 7780 alcohol related crashes.

“We are trying to reduce this number. So if you get stopped at a checkpoint please be patient, you will not be detained any longer than is necessary to insure you are not driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs, then you will be on your way again,” Hohman said.
