Skelton votes to restrict refined petroleum product sales to Iran

Congressman Ike Skelton
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Dec. 16, 2009) — Congressman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) announced yesterday that the U.S. House of Representatives has approved H.R. 2194, the Iran Refined Petroleum Sanctions Act. Skelton both cosponsored and voted in favor of the legislation.

“America must send a message to Iran — turn away from nuclear weapons or face severe economic sanctions from the international community. The bipartisan legislation that passed out of the House yesterday sends such a message and builds upon the work being done by the Administration to consolidate international pressure against Iran’s flagrant nuclear violations,” Skelton said.

H.R. 2194, which passed the House by a vote of 412 to 12, extends and amends the Iran Sanctions Act of 2006. Designed to prevent Iran from pursuing further nuclear weapons development, this bill would allow the president to pressure the Iranian government by restricting the flow of refined petroleum products into that country. Iran currently imports more than 25 percent of its supply of gasoline and other refined petroleum products.

Before becoming law, the measure must be approved by the Senate and signed by President Barack Obama.

Congressman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) serves as chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. Congressman Skelton’s website is at www.house.gov/skelton.
