Skelton says he’s glad House voted to reauthorize local firefighter grants

Congressman Ike Skelton
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Nov. 18, 2009) — Congressman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) announced today that Congress has approved H.R. 3791, the Fire Grants Reauthorization Act. The bipartisan legislation would reauthorize the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG) and the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program for five years.

“At a time when many rural communities are facing budget shortfalls, the Fire Grants Reauthorization Act would help to ensure that our firefighters have the tools they need to prevent and fight fires and keep us safe.

“I am pleased the legislation would provide support for volunteer fire departments and would make it easier for fire departments serving towns of less than 20,000 to take advantage of these programs,” said Skelton.

The U.S. House of Representatives approved H.R. 3791 by a vote of 395 to 31. The U.S. Senate must consider the legislation before it is sent to the President for his signature.

Congressman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) serves as chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. Congressman Skelton’s website is at www.house.gov/skelton.
