Republicans who appease racists kill their credibility
Republicans who appease racists kill their credibility

“If Republicans rake her (Judge Sotomayor) over the coals, Republicans will never be elected again.”Geraldo Rivera, Fox News, to Don Imus on 5/28/09

“I think the confirmation process will be more of a test of the Republican Party than it is for Judge Sotomayor.” — Sen. Chuckie Schumer, D-N.Y., arguing that Republicans would oppose Sotomayor at their peril.

“HOCKEYPUCKS!!” — Yours Truly

Can we get an “AMEN!” from someone ... anyone ... in the Republican Party? When will a leader emerge who’ll stick up for the principle of blind justice under the law? Or will the tepid Republicans continue to sink their teeth into the wish and wonder sandwich of racial politics? That’s where you wish Latinos don’t notice your opposition and wonder if Latinos will vote for you now.

Gee, how’d that work out for that pro-illegal immigrant moderate John McCain?

Before I go further, let me cite the examples of Judge Sotomayor’s prejudice.

In case you’re from Skiles Junior High, here’s what she said: “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived her life.” She followed up with a recent ruling preventing an appeal from a white dyslexic firefighter who was ousted from getting a job strictly because he was white. That case is currently before the Supreme Court and is likely to be reversed. She has also mentioned that judges set “policy” then snickered that the comment was made on tape.

It’s noteworthy that Democrats viciously attacked Latinos, Miguel Estrada and Alberto Gonzales, when appointed by Republican presidents.

In 1991 when President George H. W. Bush appointed Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court, Judge Thomas was put through what he referred to as a “high-tech lynching.” He eked out his Senate confirmation 52-48. Forty six Democrats voted against him. Were they afraid of losing the black vote? I don’t think so.

In 1992 Clinton beat the incumbent Bush for the presidency.

As then Senator and now Vice-President Joe Biden said, “I think the only reason Clarence Thomas is on the Supreme Court is because he’s black.”

Other than being white males, we don’t know for sure why the left hated Alito and Roberts who NEVER made any statements remotely as damaging as Judge Sotomayor. Obama voted against both judges. Was he worried about losing the White or Italian vote?

The notion that a minority can’t be racist or sexist is illogical at best and racist in and of itself.

“If we can’t oppose this judge then the Republican Party is extinct.” — Rush Limbaugh

Liberals don’t worry about catering to get along. They attack. Democrats regained power in 2006 and 2008 by fighting every inch of the way, whether they had a case or not.

If Republicans shy away from fights on the basis of principle because of a racist’s race, religion, or class, they accept it. The moral authority for going against bigotry disappears. If Judge Sotomayor must be fought with every political tactic that Democrats used against a non-racist judges Alito, Roberts and Thomas, then so be it.

Let President Obama explain his racist choice and Judge Sotomayor enlighten us on why she is qualified based on what she said.

When you walk by something that’s wrong without doing anything about it, you create a new standard.

If Judge Sotomayor is confirmed she’ll take this oath:

“I Sonia Sotomayor, do solemnly swear that I will administer justice without respect to persons, and do equal right to the poor and to the rich, and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent upon me as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States of America under the Constitution and laws of the United States. So help me G-d.”

At that moment, Sonia Sotomayor will become a Supreme Court Justice ... and be committing felony perjury.

How ironic.
