Waynesville woman dies, man badly hurt in Wednesday evening wreck

Waynesville firefighters work to clean up the wreckage of a head-on crash Wednesday evening on Highway T.
WAYNESVILLE, Mo. (April 30, 2009) — One Waynesville resident died and another was badly hurt in a head-on crash Wednesday evening on Highway T about two miles north of Waynesville.

The wreck at 6:23 p.m. snarled traffic for nearly two hours, backing up traffic from Taylor Subdivision all the way south to Rainbow Road.

State troopers reported that Claudier M. Jordan, 76, had been northbound in her 1997 Lincoln Town Car when a southbound 1998 Ford Explorer driven by Brandon K. Mitchell, 20, crossed the centerline and struck Jordan’s car head-on. Both drivers were transported by Pulaski County Ambulance District paramedics to General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital, where Jordan was pronounced dead at 7:27 p.m. by Dr. Lori Smith.

Jordan’s death was the fourth so far this year in the Troop I region of central Missouri, which stretches along Interstate 44 from Laclede to Crawford counties, as well as the adjacent counties of Maries and Dent.

Mitchell survived the crash and was treated for moderate injuries. Both drivers had been wearing their seat belts.

Waynesville firefighters shut down the road while they extricated the driver of the Lincoln; Lt. Mike Shempert said the man driving the Ford Explorer was able to get out of his SUV and was walking around at the point he arrived. Two fire trucks arrived with two sets of cutting tools to do the extrication with additional firefighters being joined by Waynesville police and county sheriff’s deputies in conducting traffic control.

Jack’s Towing removed the vehicles, both of which were totaled. The Ford Explorer was southbound with major front-end damage; the Lincoln had run off the road and firefighters had to remove its roof to extricate the driver.
