Head-on wreck on Highway T sends two to hospital Wednesday evening

Waynesville Assistant Police Chief Clarence Liberty and Trooper J. Collins investigate a head-on Wednesday evening wreck on Highway T north of Waynesville.
WAYNESVILLE, Mo. (April 29, 2009) — A major head-on crash snarled traffic for nearly two hours Wednesday evening on Highway T three miles north of Waynesville, backing up traffic from Taylor Subdivision all the way south to Rainbow Road.

The wreck about 6:30 p.m. involved a black Ford Explorer SUV and a green Lincoln Town Car and sent the drivers of both vehicles to General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital with undetermined injuries. Crash details weren’t immediately available and may not be available for some time, according to Trooper J. Collins of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Waynesville firefighters shut down the road while they extricated the driver of the Lincoln; Lt. Mike Shempert said the man driving the Ford Explorer was able to get out of his SUV and was walking around at the point he arrived. Two fire trucks arrived with two sets of cutting tools to do the extrication with additional firefighters being joined by Waynesville police and county sheriff’s deputies in conducting traffic control.

Jack’s Towing removed the vehicles, both of which were totaled. The Ford Explorer was southbound with major front-end damage; the Lincoln had run off the road and firefighters had to remove its roof to extricate the driver.

Two other crashes happened about the same time, but no information was available about either wreck.

Pulaski County 911 dispatchers reported that a vehicle had smashed into a group of storage units on the south outer road of Interstate 44 about 6 p.m., and St. Robert police reported another crash on Highway Y north of St. Robert about 7 p.m. It’s not clear whether either wreck involved injuries.
