WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 25, 2013) — U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today met with Secretary of Defense nominee, former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel, ahead of next week’s nomination hearing, and issued the following statement:
“Senator Hagel answered some tough questions on where we’re going to find savings for taxpayers in the Pentagon budget while maintaining the superiority of our armed forces. He’s got an excellent resume as a combat veteran and a strong understanding of the issues critical to protecting our national security interests, and I look forward to hearing his testimony in front of the full committee next week.”
During the meeting, McCaskill questioned Hagel on Pentagon spending, where billions of dollars have been lost due to waste (click this link) due to waste, particularly in the area of contract spending. McCaskill has been a Senate leader in rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse in military contracting, recently passing historic legislation (click this link) that reforms contracting guidelines for contingency operations.
