|PULASKI COUNTY, Mo. (Jan. 20, 2009) — A few more candidates turned in papers on Monday, but a rush of last-minute filings can be expected today, the last day candidates can file to have their names on the April ballot for school boards, city councils, and fire and ambulance districts.
The closing time for filings varies based on the business hours of the organization. City council, school board and ambulance board candidates should file at their city hall, school administration building, or main ambulance base. Since the Crocker and Dixon fire districts don’t have full-time staff, Crocker fire board candidates file papers at the Crocker City Hall and Dixon fire board candidates file at the offices of Bassett Realty.
All of Pulaski County’s five cities closed their offices for Martin Luther King Day, but other governmental bodies were open for business on Monday.
Dixon R-I School District candidate Greg Roberson turned in papers on Monday, joining incumbents Troy Porter and Craig Rivera.
School officials with the Richland R-IV School District reported Tuesday morning that they had a late filing on Friday. Eric Graves turned in candidacy papers Friday and joins challengers Brenda Mathes, Elizabeth Warren, Donna Guevremont, Mike Calvetti, and Jerry Pemberton. Neither of the two incumbents, Troy Posten and Jo-Ellen Ferguson, have yet filed.
The Pulaski County Ambulance District received a new candidate filing on Monday when incumbent Waynesville Subdistrict 3 board member Cindy Walters turned in her candidacy papers. Walters joins Ronnie Layman of Crocker, who filed last month for the Subdistrict 4 position currently held by Larry Salveter, who does not plan to run for re-election.
One fire district hasn’t had its candidates reported previously. The Duke Rural Fire Protection District includes the Big Piney section of Pulaski County southeast of Fort Leonard Wood and the positions of two incumbent board members will go on the ballot. Those seats are held by Ron Wyatt of Duke and Dan Deuser, formerly of Duke and now of Steelville. As of Monday evening, Scott Bisker of Beulah and Paula J. Wyatt of Duke had filed for those positions.
Some offices still don’t have enough candidates to fill all available positions.
In the Plato R-V School District, none of the incumbents, Mike Friend or Penny Morrison who hold three-year terms or Pete Scurlock who was appointed to fill a vacancy and would be running for the remaining two years of an unexpired term, have yet turned in their candidacy papers. Two challengers Kevin Christenson and Kimberly A. (Murry) Hodges, have filed.
There’s also an open seat on the Crocker City Council, where incumbent Ward II Alderman Kim Skaggs-Henson hasn’t turned in her candidacy papers yet, and no one else has filed for that seat, either.
The Dixon Rural Fire Protection District has two seats available currently held by Les Clark and Jim Humphrey. Clark filed for re-election in December but Humphrey hasn’t turned in candidacy papers, and neither has anyone else. In the Dixon Ambulance District, Subdistrict 1 incumbent Dennis Lachowicz turned in his candidacy papers but Subdistrict 4 incumbent Art Forshey has not. Also in Dixon, Ward III Alderman Steven Parker has not yet filed for re-election to his two-year term.
While city councils must hold elections regardless of how many candidates file, school boards, fire boards and ambulance boards can save money by not holding an election if the number of people running for office is the same as the number of people to be elected. So far that’s the case only in Swedeborg, where all three incumbents are running for re-election.
