Keeping in Touch with Tourism: Tourism Bureau announces activities

Tourism Director Beth Wiles
Greetings from the Pulaski County Tourism Bureau and Visitors Center! In 2009 we will begin a newspaper column to keep you informed on various programs that the Pulaski County Tourism Bureau offers as well as information on attractions and events occurring in the area as well as around the state.

We are pleased to announce that the new Pulaski County Visitors Guide is available. This guide is distributed to area visitors, state run welcome centers, independent visitors centers, and to fulfill requests from our website, phone calls and requests from national advertising that the Bureau places. The guide contains information on area attractions, restaurants, shopping, lodging and local map. Please stop by the Visitors Center located at 137 St. Robert Blvd., Monday through Friday 8am-5pm for your copy.

This is tradeshow season where we attend various tradeshows, promoting Pulaski County. We will be promoting our family friendly outdoor activities, educational museums and dining options at various Outdoor/Sportsmen shows in Missouri and Illinois. We meet and greet potential visitors, hand out the Pulaski County Visitors Guide and hold a drawing for Pulaski County gifts. We will also be meeting, one-on-one, with up to 50 tour operators and bank travel clubs at the American Bus Association this month.

January 22nd at 8:30am in the Visitors Center, we will be holding our annual workshop for event planners to explain the Co-Op Marketing program as well as explain the new website introduced by the State of Missouri, Division of Tourism, www.visitmo.com. The Co-op Marketing program is a monetary fund that is available to assist event planners in advertising events held in Pulaski County. Cities and Chambers may also apply for assistance in printing of brochures that market their cities. Please call 573.336.6355 for more information or to RSVP for this meeting.

January 15th is the first day for businesses to log onto the state of Missouri tourism website, www.VisitMo.com, and mark that their listing is to be included in the 2010 (Yes they are already working on the 2010 Vacation Guide!). I encourage all businesses to get on line, set up a free account, and have their business listed for free, both on the web and in the printed vacation guide.

I am currently working on building a Meet and Greet program for the various group tour buses and reunion groups that come to our area. This program will offer a tiered choice of programs in which the groups can choose various activities they would like to experience. They will be able to choose themed meet and greets here at the center, at restaurants, experience photo opportunities at historic sites, dining entertainment and more. If you or any organizations in the county would be interested in learning more about this program, please give me a call.

Even though it’s January and cold outside, there are plenty of things to do in Pulaski County. Visit our website at www.visitpulaskicounty.org and click on the calendar. Shake off the cabin fever that is setting in by attending the Kickapoo Trace Muzzle Loaders Black Powder Tradeshow that will be held January 17-18 or maybe take the family to the 2nd Annual Waynesville-St. Robert Chamber of Commerce Chili Cook-off to be held January 24th. If you have an amazing chili recipe you want to show off be sure to contact the Waynesville-St Robert Chamber of Commerce at 573.336.5121 for more information.
