Widener scheduled for sentencing today in Coach Don Nelson DWI death

VIENNA, Mo. (Feb. 23, 2011) -- UPDATE: Judge Robert Schollmeyer rejected the sentencing advisory report of the state board of probation and parole and instead of no prison time, imposes 10 years prison with 85 percent mandatory time served. However, he will review the sentence after Widener spends 4 months in state prison with alcohol treatment.

Family members and friends of former Waynesville High School baseball coach Don Nelson have gathered in the Maries County Courthouse for the sentencing of George Harry Widener in a vehicular homicide case.

Judge Robert Schollmeyer from Osage County was scheduled to hear the case at 9 a.m. Due to a scheduling mistake, the case will be heard with about a 45 minute delay. The case is expected to be heard about 10 a.m.

Widener previously pleaded guilty and his defense attorney, Dan Birdsong, requested a sentencing advisory report from probation and parole officials. The results of that report are not binding but are usually followed by judges. The SAR recommendation on sentencing will be announced today.
