Fort Leonard Wood firefighters to receive focus this week for their work
FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (July 6, 2010) — Strict construction standards and rules for both professional and personal conduct while living and working in government quarters mean Fort Leonard Wood firefighters don’t need to spend much time fighting fires. Many of the full-time on-post fire personnel also volunteer in area civilian fire departments and are much more likely to respond to an off-post civilian fire call during their off-duty hours than they are to respond to a fire on Fort Leonard Wood.

However, when fires or hazardous material emergencies do happen, they’re likely to be much more serious. That’s especially true in a deployed military environment when a fire or explosion may be due to enemy attack, and two events Tuesday and Wednesday will recognize the Fort Leonard Wood firefighters for their work.

At 6 p.m. Tuesday, the 562nd Firefighter Detachment of the post’s 94th Engineer Battalion will have a deployment ceremony at Fire Station No. 1 for an upcoming deployment, following a year of training with a two-week capstone course at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas.

“The course was made up of a diverse representation of firefighters, and members of the 562nd received required certification skills to ensure mission readiness,” said Capt. Dennis Hines, commander of the 94th Engineer Battalion’s headquarters and headquarters company.

The detachment’s motto is to “put the wet stuff on the red stuff,” according to Hines.

At 8 a.m. Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Ike Skelton will meet with firefighters at the same fire station and eat breakfast. According to a press release from his office, Skelton “will visit with the Fort Leonard Wood fire department and discuss Congress’ work on their behalf.”
