Memorial Day weekend starts with one dead on ATV, 11 dumped from boat
FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (May 29, 2010) — The sun had barely gone down on the first night of Memorial Day weekend when the Fort Leonard Wood area received its first fatality on a rural road east of the post. About the same time Friday night, multiple emergency agencies responded for a water rescue south of the post for which little information was immediately available.

According to Missouri State Highway Patrol reports, Kevin L. Leech, 38, of Fort Leonard Wood, had been riding a 2004 Suzuki ATV westbound on Ticket Road in Phelps County about five miles east of the post when he ran off the left side of the roadway at 10:30 p.m. and struck two trees; his ATV overturned and ejected him onto the roadway.

Leech, who had not been wearing a helmet, was transported by Fort Leonard Wood ambulance personnel to General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital but pronounced dead at 1:23 a.m. Saturday.

His ATV was extensively damaged and removed by Jack’s Towing.

Since the crash location is on a river bottom road that can only be reached from a road that begins inside Fort Leonard Wood, Doolittle firefighters attempted to go through the east gate of Fort Leonard Wood about 11:27 p.m. but had to wait for military police to open the locked gate.

Little information was immediately available about a water rescue on Bald Ridge Creek off Highway TT outside the South Gate of Fort Leonard Wood.

Based on preliminary information, a boat flipped over with 11 people on board prior to 10:20 p.m.; first responders from the Duke Fire Protection District called for help from the Pulaski County Ambulance District and then asked for additional ambulances from Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla. Staff for Life air ambulance personnel left their base about 10:48 p.m. but were not needed.
