Responding to State of the Union, Skelton says White House lost its way

Congressman Ike Skelton
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 27, 2010) — Tonight, Congressman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) attended President Barack Obama’s State of the Union Address. His reaction is set forth below:

_____

“Somewhere along the line, the White House lost its way. Instead of focusing on solutions to help America’s families wade through the wreckage of the worst economic crisis since the 1930s, Washington has wasted valuable time wrestling with partisan politics in an effort to rush through drastic reforms that do not directly address our most immediate needs. People in Missouri and across the nation are frustrated, as am I. The President’s address has lent us all hope — hope that the Administration is finally heeding our concerns. It’s about time.

“For too long, Washington has not paid enough attention to our real challenge: getting Americans working again. Last year, we laid the foundation needed to get Americans back to work with our economic recovery package, and I am encouraged that President Obama finally seems ready to build upon that foundation. We need to immediately enact small business tax cuts and hiring incentives that will spur job growth. It is time for President Obama and my colleagues in the Congress to step up to the plate and start fighting the real battles to help get our nation back on track.

“This Administration must also continue its commitment to keeping the American people safe and secure. At last, we have a President who understands the importance of winning the war in Afghanistan — a refreshing change from years of distraction in Iraq that crippled our efforts elsewhere. The President continues to make the right decisions where our national security is concerned, from increasing the number of troops in Afghanistan to preventing weapons of mass destruction from falling into the wrong hands.

“I look forward to working with the President and his Administration over the coming year. I hope he will honor his refocused commitments to the American people.”

Congressman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) serves as chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. Congressman Skelton’s website is at www.house.gov/skelton.
