Military Police company protecting VIPs to be given farewell Saturday
FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (Jan. 14, 2010) — A squad-sized unit of military police tasked with protecting VIPs will soon deploy to Iraq from Fort Leonard Wood, and post personnel will hold a farewell ceremony Saturday evening for the soldiers.

Scheduled for 9 p.m., the farewell ceremony for the 13th Military Police Company will be in the Pippin Youth Center.

According to public affairs personnel, the unit is expected to deploy for more than eight months.

The 13th MP Company is a relatively new unit at Fort Leonard Wood which officially moved to the installation in July 2008 from its previous duty station in the Italian city of Vicenza. Part of the 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, the company dates back to World War II and saw service in Thailand as part of the Vietnam War. Its movement to Fort Leonard Wood was part of the relocation of the 92nd Military Police Battalion from Fort Benning to Fort Leonard Wood.

Fort Leonard Wood’s 4th MEB is a collection of numerous “go-to-war” units under the auspices of FORSCOM, Forces Command, which have a distinctly different mission than the TRADOC training and doctrine units that, with the exception of the 5th Engineer Battalion, were until recently the major units at Fort Leonard Wood. The 5th Engineers and 94th Engineers are the two largest FORSCOM units at Fort Leonard Wood, but the 13th MP Company is one of many smaller units that also play a part in the new FORSCOM functions of the post.
