Skelton meets with Secretary of Labor to discuss 4th district’s unemployment

Congressman Ike Skelton
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Nov. 4, 2009) — Congressman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) recently met with U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis to discuss the economy and issues important to Show-Me State residents. During the meeting, Skelton spelled out his concerns about the unemployment rate in Missouri’s Fourth Congressional District and discussed potential solutions to boosting job opportunities in rural Missouri.

“I invited Secretary Solis to my office so that we could talk about the economic challenges facing rural America.

“The economy remains a top priority in our state. That is why it was important for me to express the views of the Fourth District directly with Secretary Solis.

“We talked about a number of matters during the meeting. But, I was particularly eager to share my concerns about the high unemployment rate in the Fourth District and to discuss how we can boost jobs and job training in rural Missouri. It is vital that we prepare our workforce to compete and succeed in the 21st century global economy.

“While last week’s report indicating 12,000 jobs were saved or created by the Recovery Act in the Fourth District is welcome news, more work remains. I am hopeful that the Secretary will take seriously my concerns and will share them with her colleagues in the Administration,” said Skelton.

Congressman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) serves as chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. Congressman Skelton’s website is at www.house.gov/skelton.
