WASHINGTON, D.C. (Aug. 21, 2009) — This week, Congressman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) hosted U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Congressman Collin C. Peterson (D-Minn.), the Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, during separate visits to the Show-Me State.

Skelton joined Vilsack in Missouri today as part of the Administration’s Rural Tour, during which Cabinet secretaries and other members of the Administration travel to small towns to listen to rural Americans. During the visit, Skelton and Vilsack spoke with farmers in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, toured the Show Me Energy Cooperative in Centerview, Missouri, and hosted a rural community forum in Sedalia, Missouri.

“As a representative of rural Missouri, it is very important for me to hear first hand how laws we establish in Congress impact life back home. The advice I get from Missourians serves me well. As always, I was pleased to sit down with farmers and other rural residents to hear their suggestions and concerns about issues facing our state,” said Skelton.

Earlier in the week, Skelton hosted Peterson in Sedalia. Skelton and Peterson, both chairmen of congressional committees important to the economic well-being of the Fourth District, met with farmers at the District Farm Bureau dinner on Aug. 19 at the farm of Pettis County Western Commissioner Larry Wilson. They attended the Governor’s Ham Breakfast at the Missouri State Fair the following day.

“I want to thank my colleague, Congressman Collin Peterson, for joining me in Sedalia. He is a friend to farmers and to all of rural America. I extend a special thank you to him for his work in Congress on behalf of Show-Me State residents and for his work with Secretary Tom Vilsack. Their Midwestern values serve them well when addressing the diverse needs of agriculture and rural America,” said Skelton.

Congressman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) serves as chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. Congressman Skelton’s website is at http://www.house.gov/skelton.
