Two motorcyclists hurt Saturday in wreck on St. Robert North Outer Road

Two motorcyclists suffered moderate injuries in a St. Robert wreck on Saturday after one clipped this car while trying to pass another motorcycle.
SAINT ROBERT, Mo. (Nov. 21, 2009 UPDATED 4 p.m., Nov. 25) — A group of motorcyclists traveling on St. Robert North Outer Road suffered two injuries when one motorcyclist tried to pass another on Saturday morning near Hex Road and hit an oncoming Mercury Sable.

According to a St. Robert Police Department report prepared by Sgt. Butch Hohman, the investigating officer, Jennifer Hicks, determined that James S. Baurley, 29, of St. Robert, had been riding a 1991 Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound at 11:50 a.m. when he attempted to overtake another motorcyclist in the group, crossed the centerline, and sideswiped the eastbound 1997 Mercury driven by Ralph A. Bush, 62, of Dixon.

“The impact was at such an angle it caused the left front tire of the Bush vehicle to blow out, causing Mr. Bush to lose control, cross over the centerline and (hit) the third vehicle, a 2007 Harley Davidson driven by Gary C. Blackwood, 63, of Hermann,” Hicks reported.

Bush was not hurt, but both Baurley and Blackwood suffered injuries that were initially reported by police as undetermined but later described by ambulance personnel as moderate. Pulaski County Ambulance District personnel transported Baurley to General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital and transported Blackwood to Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla. All three were wearing seat belts or motorcycle helmets, police reported.

Jack’s Towing removed Bush’s car and Blackwood’s motorcycle, both of which sustained moderate damage. Baurley’s motorcycle had extensive damage and was removed by Poor Boy’s Towing.

St. Robert firefighters, some of whom were in full dress uniform from attending a funeral, also responded to the crash to assist with patient care and traffic control.

In an unrelated Saturday incident:

• State troopers in Laclede County arrested Harold J. Reynolds, 61, of Plato, at 2:18 p.m. on charges of driving while intoxicated and having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle. Troopers transported him to the Laclede County jail where he was subsequently released.
