Motorcyclist killed in head-on crash south of Richland Thursday afternoon

A Richland teen totaled his car but was not hurt after a motorcyclist crossed the centerline and died in a head-on crash.
RICHLAND, Mo. (Aug. 27, 2009) — A head-on crash between a motorcyclist and a Lincoln Continental on the “S” curves about four miles south of Richland killed the motorcyclist and totaled both vehicles.

According to Missouri State Highway Patrol reports, William D. Swingle, 66, of Richland, had been northbound on a 2003 Yamaha motorcycle at 1:20 p.m. when he crossed the center line of Highway 7 into the path of a southbound 1985 Lincoln Continental driven by Damon T. Cohen, 18, also of Richland. Both vehicles collided head-on and came to rest in the southbound lane.

Emergency personnel initially called for a helicopter ambulance but later cancelled that request. Deputy Coroner Gary Carmack, who also serves as director of the Pulaski County Ambulance District, pronounced Swingle dead at 1:48 p.m.

Swingle had been wearing his helmet and Cohen had been wearing his seat belt. Cohen was not hurt in the crash.

Other agencies responding included Tri-County Rural Fire Protection District firefighters and Mark Twain REACT volunteers who controlled traffic on a blind curve and stopped most vehicles until 2:35 p.m. when personnel from Larry’s Towing of Richland finished removing both the car and the motorcycle.
