399th Army Band sergeant named Fort Leonard Wood soldier of the year

Sgt. Wesley Henderson (shown at a prior rank) is Fort Leonard Wood's soldier of the year.
FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (July 21, 2009) — It’s not unusual for the person selected as soldier of the year at Fort Leonard Wood to have a hard-charging attitude and high aspirations for his future, and Sgt. Wesley D. Henderson, 24, is no exception.

His military career goals include maxing the Army Physical Fitness Test, attending airborne and air assault school, and retiring as a command sergeant major; his off-duty activities include hunting, weightlifting and watching football.

So what’s his MOS?

He’s an Army musician in the 399th Army Band, with a bachelors’ degree in music performance as a distinguished honor graduate from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, training at the Armed Forces School of Music, and work already underway on a masters’ degree in business administration.

Henderson will be honored July 31 for his somewhat uncommon combination of military and musical interests by the Committee of 50, a military support organization in St. Robert, whose members will also present him with various gifts recognizing his service.

In biographical information supplied by the Committee of 50, Henderson said he’s been in the military for 22 months, is married, and has three children.

“I joined the army to give my family a better life. All the benefits that the Army offers really struck a chord with me, and joining was definitely the best career move that I have made,” Henderson wrote. “I enjoy playing with my three sons which usually involves rolling on the ground, crawling through the grass, and chasing after them.”

In his relatively brief military career, Henderson has already received one Army Commendation Medal and five Army Achievement Medals, as well as being named the 2009 Maneuver Support Center and Fort Leonard Wood soldier of the year.
