Fort Leonard Wood officials release name of Polla Road fatal crash victim
FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (Jan. 27, 2010) — Officials at Fort Leonard Wood have released the name of the man who died last week in a crash on Polla Road that shut down the West Gate for hours leading out of Waynesville and snarled main gate traffic from Saint Robert due to the higher number of vehicles.

Post spokesman Jeff Maddy said the Jan. 20 crash remains under investigation, but the victim was Adam William Owens, 28, a civilian contract employee on the post. Emergency personnel at the crash scene attempted resuscitation and transported him to General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital, where he was then pronounced dead.

Information on Owens’ job duties or home city wasn’t immediately available.

The other person hurt in the crash was Melvin Wright, 34, who according to Pulaski County Ambulance District personnel, was also transported to General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital. Post officials said he suffered minor injuries.

The crash happened on a bridge on Polla Road during the morning rush-hour commute. In a media release issued last week, post officials said preliminary investigation indicates that Owens was driving a 1999 Dodge Stratus and “apparently attempting to make a U-turn from a stopped position on the right shoulder of the eastbound Polla Road” when his vehicle was struck by Wright’s eastbound 2005 GMC Yukon.

Maddy said last week that Owens’ vehicle was totaled, with “the majority of the damage ... located on the driver side of the vehicle near the driver’s door.”
