WAYNESVILLE, Mo. (Dec. 3, 2009) — Waynesville motorists who haven’t yet moved their cars from the downtown area need to do so soon, according to city police.

Municipal and county parking lots immediately adjacent to the Pulaski County Courthouse have already been closed with police tape and orange cones, since many of them will be used for vendors or other activities at tonight’s Christmas on the Square event. The courthouse closes at 4:30 p.m., and drivers have until 5 p.m. to remove their cars from on-street parking spaces on a stretch of Historic Route 66 running from Downtown Service Station to Highway 17. Cars are also barred on the west, east and north sides of the courthouse square, except for vehicles of vendors or participants in tonight’s activities.

City police will begin redirecting traffic off Historic Route 66 onto Olive Street, which is next to Downtown Service Station, and running it along North Street to Route 17.

That traffic closure will last until at least 8 p.m. and possibly later for tonight’s event. Most downtown businesses are open for late hours tonight, and some business owners who don’t have retail products to sell traditionally offer hot cider, coffee, cookies or other treats to downtown shoppers.

In addition to music performances, treats, and shopping, Christmas on the Square participants will be able to have photographs taken with Santa or with the Grinch tonight.
