NEWBURG, Mo. (Dec. 9, 2009) — Army Col. Pamela L. Martis, a 1981 graduate of Newburg High School and daughter of Wilma Darlene Cardin of Newburg, is returning to the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., after being deployed to Afghanistan to serve in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Enduring Freedom is the official name given to anti-terrorism military operations involving U.S. troops and allied coalition partners. Reserve component members from all branches of the U.S. armed forces have been mobilized, activated and deployed along with active duty members to support the war against global terrorism. Mission objectives encompass combating the international terrorist network or regime forces outside the borders of the United States. U.S. troops serve in South and Southwest Asia, Central Asia, the Arabian peninsula, the Horn of Africa, islands in the Pacific, and Europe.
Martis was a senior police advisor to the Afghan National Police. The colonel has served in the military for 24 years.
She is the niece of Jerry and Sophie Agatucci of Peoria, Ill.
Her husband, Scott, is the son of Etta A. Martis of Pekin, Ill.
The colonel received a bachelor's degree in 1985 from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y. She earned a master's degree in 1995 from the University of Kansas, Lawrence.
