PULASKI COUNTY, Mo. (Dec. 16, 2010) — One of Pulaski County’s longest-serving political figures threw his hat back into the ring Tuesday in the filings for the Waynesville City Council.
Art Anderson, 86, was first elected to the Waynesville school board in the late 1940s when he was only 24 years old. Anderson later served for many years on the Waynesville City Council, retiring only four years ago. His successor as Ward II councilman was Alan Clark, who resigned to accept appointment as the St. Robert city administrator and was replaced by Mitch McConnell, who then resigned to accept appointment as the Waynesville land use administrator. The seat is currently filled by Perry Roberts, who hasn’t yet filed.
The filing period remains open until Jan. 18. Others who filed Tuesday in Waynesville were incumbent Ward I Councilwoman Diane Stanford and incumbent Ward II Councilwoman Luge Hardman; Ward IV Councilman Mike France hasn’t yet filed.
Former Richland Mayor Lucy Henson is also seeking to regain her post. She’s now a Ward II Alderman but not up for re-election this year, and filed the first day is seeking the post as mayor which she held until six years ago when defeated by the incumbent, Mayor Bob Wall.
Municipal Judge Rodney Blanchard is also seeking re-election in Richland and filed the first day, but neither Ward I Alderman Eldon Haun, Ward II Alderman Tom Murphy, nor Ward III Alderman Tim Bailey have yet filed for re-election.
In St. Robert, four incumbents, Mayor George Sanders, Ward I Alderman Jim Phillips, Ward III Alderman Alan Johannsen and Ward IV Alderman Bill Shaw filed the first day. Ward II was represented by Gene Newkirk who resigned after he was elected to the Pulaski County Presiding Commissioner post; aldermen voted last week Monday to accept the mayor’s recommendation to appoint his wife, Sylvia Newkirk, but she hasn’t yet filed for election.
For other cities in the area, none of the incumbents, Crocker Mayor Linda Wilson, Ward I Alderman Herman Goodrich and Ward II Alderman Lorie Layman, had filed as of Thursday morning and no challengers have yet filed against any of them.
In Dixon, Ward I Alderman Vi Tyson was the only incumbent to file fo re-election and so far she’s unopposed. None of the other incumbents, Mayor Darrell French, Municipal Judge Evan Shackelford, Ward II Alderman Steven Parker, and Ward III Alderman John Sheppard, have yet filed. However, Ben Copeland has filed for mayor and Larry Albertson has filed for Sheppard’s Ward III seat.
In Richland, none of incumbents, Mayor Bob Wall, Municipal Judge Rodney Blanchard, Ward I Alderman Eldon Haun, Ward II Alderman Tom Murphy, and Ward III Alderman Tim Bailey have yet filed. However, Ward II Alderman Lucy Henson, who isn’t up for re-election this year, filed Tuesday for mayor.
